Achievements

The Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital Foundation would not exist without the support of its many donors and volunteers. Your donations help us offer quality care, finance research projects, renovate the hospital’s facilities, as well as invest in state-of-the-art equipment.

Since 1984 we have raised more than $14 million. Thank you for contributing to our patients’ well-being and to the advancement of health care in our region.

Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge    [TOP]

Built at a total cost of $4.7 million and entirely financed by the public’s generous donations, the Lodge welcomes free of charge those patients who need lodging while receiving cancer treatments at the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre. The Lodge can accomodate up to 85 patients and their companions; it features many living rooms, a full-service kitchen, a games room as well as rest areas for the residents. The Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge was officially opened in September 1993.

Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre    [TOP]

Thanks to your generous donations the Dr. Léon-Richard Oncology Centre has acquired the most advanced technology to treat cancer patients. Each year, the Centre treats approximately 1,200 new cancer patients and offers nearly 20,000 radiotherapy treatments and 4,500 chemotherapy treatments. The Centre, one of the busiest in Atlantic Canada, treats patients from all corners of New Brunswick.

Hemodialysis unit    [TOP]

Built and furnished at a cost of $6 million, of which $3.2 million comes directly from the public’s generosity, the new hemodialysis unit of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Regional Hospital is the most modern centre of its kind in Atlantic Canada. Equipped with 20 new workstations as well as new treatment and consultation rooms, staff can now treat many patients from all corners of the Maritimes who suffer from kidney failure.

Cardiology    [TOP]

  • Cardiac Wellness Program

In 1999, the Foundation contributed to the creation of the Cardiac Wellness Program. The team of health professionals (doctors, nurses, kinesiologists and dieticians) offer complete services in prevention and cardiac rehabilitation in the hopes of controlling the risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases. The program thus offers guidance through teaching, support and exercise.

Pediatrics    [TOP]

In 2001, the pediatric unit was completely renovated to meet the needs of children, teens and their families. This unit offers care to patients aged 0 to 18 years and has 14 beds.

Search for a Cure    [TOP]

Beneficiary project of the 2005 Tree of Hope campaign

The Search for a Cure project encompassed four major components:

Research

The purchase of highly specialized equipment will allow the development of new tests, which in turn will allow medical professionals to know in advance what the best anti-cancer treatment is for each patient. The goal of this research: we hope that one day customized treatments will become available.

Education

The goal of the Info-Hope line is to identify the pediatric resources within the province, in order to have faster access to these resources, whether they are local or provincial. Info-Hope will also offer educational tools adapted to children and their families. It will serve as a source of information for the public as well as for health professionals.

Communication

Second and Final Phase of ICON

The Integrated Computerized Oncology Network (ICON) is a system that will allow the consolidation of data and the creation of increasingly precise customized treatments, in order to improve the safety and quality of life of oncology patients. Consequently, ICON will allow:

  • an understanding of the epidemiology (origin, characteristics, factors, etc.) of the cancers, which will help to define the preventative and therapeutic methods to use;
  • a better evaluation of the treatments’ effectiveness;
  • easier and more efficient communication with patients and the physicians treating them; and
  • improved follow-up care of treated patients.

Technology

A liquid-based cytology device, already being used in the U.S. and in certain Canadian provinces, is the instrument of choice for the screening of cervical cancer, precancerous lesions and other types of cancer. With this new technology, one can conduct both a screening and the identification the various types of cancer using the same sample. This device will allow a better quality of specimen, therefore resulting in the elimination of certain surgeries, biopsies and unneeded visits to the hospital.
